Are You Looking?

What are you looking for? I mean… aren’t we all searching for something?

Perhaps you have defined what you want, you know…set a goal or two? In my coaching role, I help people set well-defined goals. Sometimes, with a little reservation.

When you define, write down and get pretty clear about exactly what you desire, your unconscious mind sets to work to help you achieve it.

Like buying a car. You decide what type of vehicle you want, the make and model…and the moment you decide the colour…you see it everywhere! Sounds familiar?

So setting a definitive goal is useful, yes? Yes, if you want to strive for singular things.

But also…NO, because fulfillment doesn’t come from one thing, it comes from many things in your life.

When you are looking for one particular thing, you pay less attention to other stuff. You narrow your focus, and in doing so, narrows your life experiences. And if you don’t get what you seek (exactly as you have defined it), have you then failed? Because if you’re not careful, you fall into that “When I…then I…” trap.

“When I get the new red sports car, then I’ll feel successful” or “When I lose 10kgs, then I’ll feel confident”. What happens if the sports car is three years old and silver? Or you lose only 6kgs? Have you failed?

Or perhaps you are a worrier and you entire focus is on that potential conflict awaiting you at work on Monday. You mind is full of dread, playing out endless doomed scenarios, and you can’t sleep. Worriers are experts at ensuring the the potential outcome will always be a disaster. It’s quite a skill. The anxiety mounts and finally on Monday, the boss is all good with your decision and a disaster has be averted. All that worry at the cost of your weekend…pity.

Isn’t in incredible how we fill our heads with one thing and we can drive ourselves near crazy obsessing over it?

A lot is missed if you are only looking in one direction. You’ve narrowed your focus down to the exclusion of everything else. What if you stepped back from your searching and just looked?

Look, wait, and see what unfolds. See the life going on around you in all directions and enjoy it for no other reason, than you can. Be the observer of your life.

It is not the attainment of one thing that will fullfil you. It’s many, many things. Don’t miss out. Ask yourself:

“Am I looking for something, or …am I looking?”
